Retail Readiness:
The Manufacturing Check
Why SSCI certification matters before your next buyer meeting.
You’ve perfected the formula, the packaging, and the pitch. Here’s what happens next, and where many brands get stuck.

01 The question buyers ask
When a major retail buyer reviews a new supplement, one of their first questions is about who manufactured it and how it’s verified.
02 The standard they look for
More retailers are looking for SSCI certification as that proof. The Supplement Safety & Compliance Initiative is a retailer-led program whose founding retailers include Walmart, GNC, The Vitamin Shoppe, and Whole Foods Market. Modeled after the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), it gives buyers one recognized standard for supplement safety, authenticity, and regulatory compliance, instead of a patchwork of audits.
03 What this means for you
If your manufacturer can’t show certification to a recognized standard, your product may stall in review no matter how strong it is. Building with an SSCI-certified partner from the start means one less hurdle when it’s time to pitch.
04 How Icelandirect can help
From ingredient sourcing and custom formulation through manufacturing, private-label packaging, and fulfillment, Icelandirect helps supplement brands build products with the quality documentation retail buyers expect.
What Is SSCI Certification?

The Supplement Safety & Compliance Initiative was launched in 2017 by the Natural Products Association, with GNC, The Vitamin Shoppe, Walmart, and Whole Foods Market among its founding retailers. Rather than writing yet another audit, SSCI benchmarks existing certification programs against one shared set of requirements. A manufacturer earns SSCI-recognized certification by passing an independent audit from an accredited certification body, such as SGS, under a benchmarked program.
The scope runs from raw-material sourcing through manufacturing, packaging, and finished-product delivery. For buyers, that turns manufacturing credentials into something they can assess quickly alongside other vendor requirements. For brands, it provides a common, independently verified reference point for the systems behind their products.
Which Retailers Recognize SSCI Certification?
Walmart and Sam’s Club require SSCI-benchmarked GMP certification for private-brand dietary supplements, while Amazon, GNC, and other major retailers recognize or accept SSCI certification as a manufacturer qualification, according to certification bodies SGS and Intertek.
That makes one credential relevant to several retail conversations at once. If you plan to sell supplements on Amazon as well as in brick-and-mortar stores, an SSCI-certified manufacturer covers a key qualification item for both. Each channel runs its own vendor process, so name the specific channel you’re targeting in every buyer conversation.
What SSCI Certification Covers

SSCI certification is a facility credential. It verifies a manufacturer’s systems and practices; it is not a product certification or an FDA approval. Your manufacturer still operates under the dietary supplement CGMPs in 21 CFR Part 111 (the FDA’s compliance guide summarizes them), and each product still needs its own specifications and testing. Buyers typically review both, so present the certification as evidence about the facility and pair it with product-level documents.
SSCI vs. NSF GMP and Other Quality Certifications
Brands often ask how SSCI fits alongside the credentials they already know:
- NSF GMP registration verifies a facility’s compliance with dietary supplement CGMPs.
- FSSC 22000 is a GFSI-recognized food safety management certification, valued by food and ingredient buyers.
- ISO 9001 certifies the quality management system across the business.
- SSCI is the retailer-driven benchmark built around what supplement retailers want to see from manufacturers.
Each answers a slightly different buyer question. A manufacturer holding several gives you the credential each channel already recognizes.
How to Evaluate a Partner Beyond the Certificate
A certificate is the starting point of your manufacturing assessment. Ask any SSCI-certified supplement manufacturer about:
- Audit scope and facility coverage: which sites and activities, including manufacturing, packaging, storage, and distribution, fall within the certification.
- Raw-material controls and traceability: how ingredients are qualified and how lots are traced from supplier to finished product.
- Quality testing: what is tested in-house and what goes to third-party labs.
- Change and complaint handling: how ingredient substitutions, packaging revisions, out-of-specification results, and customer complaints are managed.
- Dosage-form range: whether the partner can produce softgels, capsules, gummies, powder stick packs, or liquids as your line grows.
These conversations show how the relationship will work after launch, not just how the facility performed on audit day.
How to Present SSCI Certification to Retail Buyers
Before outreach, write one short proof point: who holds the certification, what it covers, and how it connects to your product. Use the same wording in your sales deck, outreach emails, and vendor questionnaires so commercial and quality teams see identical facts.
A concise buyer email follows four steps:
- Identify the proposed product, dosage form, and retail channel.
- Name your certified manufacturing partner and its certification scope.
- Offer the facility certificate and relevant product-quality documents.
- Request a buyer meeting or a vendor-document review.
Use a subject line that names the category and purpose, such as “Omega-3 softgel: vendor qualification review,” so the buyer understands the opportunity before opening an attachment.
Then organize your supporting documents so each one answers its own question:
| Document | What it helps establish |
|---|---|
| Manufacturing certificate | The named facility’s certification and stated scope |
| Product specification | The quality requirements defined for the product |
| Certificate of analysis | Test results for the identified material or batch |
| Label artwork | Product identity, ingredient declarations, and consumer-facing information |
Keep product and facility names consistent across every document, and check label artwork against your manufacturer’s label printing specifications. Share detailed audit reports or proprietary specifications through a controlled exchange rather than an introductory email.
SSCI Certification FAQs
Does Walmart require SSCI certification?
For private-brand dietary supplements, Walmart and Sam’s Club require SSCI-benchmarked GMP certification. Requirements for other supplement programs vary by category, so confirm the current vendor requirements with your buyer.
Is SSCI a product certification?
No. SSCI recognizes certification of a manufacturer’s facility and systems. Programs such as USP Verified or NSF Certified for Sport evaluate individual finished products.
How do I confirm a manufacturer is SSCI-certified?
Ask for the current certificate and check the certification body, scope, facility address, and expiration date. Then confirm that the facility on the certificate is the one producing your product.
