About NOAA’s seafood inspection program

NOAA provides the seafood industry with inspection services for fish, shellfish, and fish products in order to ensure the protection and consistency of seafood.

Their aim is to promote and support the industry, for the good of customers, the efficiency, protection, and marketability of seafood and fishery products.

Vessels, processing plants, and retail facilities are among their program participants. Both edible meat types ranging from whole fish to formulated products, as well as fish meal products used for animal feeds, are eligible for inspection and approval.

Foreign manufacturers and U.S. importers must comply with U.S. seafood, shellfish, and seafood products legislation. Product standards, process control, preparation, and sanitary procedures are the responsibility of international manufacturers, and U.S. importers are responsible for ensuring that these criteria have been met.

Look at the labels to decide the origins of your seafood. It is mandatory for any seafood sold in the United States to have country-of-origin marking on the box.

All certified Icelandirect’s goods use official marketings showing they have been federally inspected.

The NOAA Seafood Inspection Program maintains contractual agreements with seafood processors, health supplement manufacturer, fish oil manufacturing companies, and foreign/domestic distributors to provide services supporting compliance with:

  • Applicable food safety regulations.
  • Product quality evaluation.
  • Product grading and certification.
  • Facility and systems compliance.
  • Export health and catch certification.
  • Training and Consultative services.

The NOAA’s seafood inspection program assures compliance with all applicable food regulations, servicing establishments such as vessels, processing plants, and retail facilities.
